Race for play-off place hots up
The three nearest challengers to runaway leaders CE Mercadal all lost at the weekend to make the Menorcan championship even more of a formality.
As Mercadal made it 13 wins from 13, with a 2-0 win away at third place UE Sami, both CD Migjorn and CE Alaior suffered defeats against UD Mahon and Penya Ciutadella.
Two goals in the first five minutes, including one inside 60 seconds from Guillem Marti, were enough for Mercadal, who are now 13 points clear at the top.
UD Mahon’s 2-0 win at CD Migjorn, courtesy of a Bartomeu Alles own goal and David Mas strike either side of half time, propels them back in to contention for the second promotion spot, and they sit fifth, one point behind Alaior.
Indeed, what had looked like a three-horse race for second place is quickly opening up to a six-way fight for the play-off spot, with Penya’s 4-2 win over CE Alaior placing them just a point further back.
Level on points with Penya are CD Menorca, who were 2-1 winners at Atletic Ciutadella courtesy of Marc Urbina’s brace.
Elsewhere, Sporting Mahon were 2-1 winners at CE Ferreries and CCE Sant Lluis registered a welcome 3-2 win at home to Atletico Villacarlos.
