Migjorn and Alaior play for their Tercera Division destiny
There are two huge games on the island this weekend that will go some way to determine which Menorcan clubs will play in Tercera Division next season.
Regional champions Migjorn have the second leg of their promotion play-off against Cardassar, having secured a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Mallorca last weekend.
It means the objective is simple – win and Migjorn are promoted to Tercera Division for the first time in their history.
Whether they become the third Menorcan team in Tercera Division is dependent on the survival of CE Alaior, who go in to the final weekend of the season needing a result.
Although they have survived finishing in the three standard relegation spaces in Tercera, Alaior are in danger of being demoted back to Regional Preferente Menorca due to the movement of other clubs in the Balearics.
Arenal, Soller and Inter Manacor have already been relegated from Tercera and will return to their respective regional leagues next season.
Alaior are four points clear of the bottom three but Tercera Division must remain at 18 teams – and with Penya Independent relegated from RFEF Segunda Division, any other Balearics team coming down from Segunda could force Alaior out of the division, which is where it gets complicated.
Formentera are in the relegation play-offs, where they will take on Izarra over two legs. If Formentera don’t win through the play-off, taking place on May 12 and May 19, then that means two spaces are needed in Tercera, which puts at least the fourth bottom team at risk.
Alaior currently sit fourth bottom on 30 points, two points behind Felanitx. Felanitx host already relegated Inter Manacor, with just two wins all season, on the final day, so Alaior would need a big upset and to beat Portmany at home themselves if they are to climb to fifth bottom.
There’s still a chance that fifth bottom could be relegated too – depending on how the Balearic teams do in the Tercera Division promotion play-offs.
Alaior’s chances of survival will of course be greater if they manage to leapfrog Felanitx – although there is still a chance they can survive from fourth bottom, if Formentera stay up and one of the four Balearic teams – Poblense, Mallorca B, Platges de Calvia, Manacor – in the Tercera Division promotion play-offs are successful.
It is going to be a nervous couple of weeks for the black and whites, only promoted to Tercera Division last season.
But there is still a chance that four Menorcan teams could line-up in Tercera Division in 2024/25, with CE Ferreries still active in the promotion play-offs following their 2-1 win over Sant Jordi last weekend.
This week they travel to Campos, who finished third in the Mallorca Preferente. A win there would put them in a two-legged winner takes promotion clash with one of the losing finalists from the champions promotion phase, which could put them up against Migjorn, if they lose this weekend.
The other Menorcan side in action this weekend is CE Mercadal, who finish their season off with a trip to champions Ibiza Islas Pitiusas.
Mercadal are bidding farewell to legendary coach Lluis Vidal, managing them for the final time after seven seasons in two different spells.
Vidal was coach of Mercadal when they reached the Tercera Division promotion play-offs, and will be succeeded by Miquel Capo, one of his former players and who is currently coach of CE Ferreries.
