Leaders CE Ferreries emphasise their title credentials
League leaders CE Ferreries outlined their credentials as title challengers with a 1-0 win away at UD Mahon.
A first half penalty from Carlos, which he won himself, was enough to separate the two sides and moves Ferreries five points clear of their opponents in the table, who drop to sixth.
Ferreries nearest challengers, CE Alaior and UE Sami, both won to open up a cushion between the top three and the rest.
For the second consecutive week, a team scored eight in the Regional Preferente Menorca as Alaior thrashed Atletic Ciutadella 8-0. Roman Huescar was responsible for five of those goals, including an eight-minute hat-trick inside the first 15 minutes of the match.
That tally takes Huescar up to 12 goals for the season, but he is still some way behind the top goal scorer in the league, David Camps, who has 18.
He added four to his total in Sami’s 4-1 win away at CF Norteno at the weekend, meaning Camps has scored half of his 18 goals this term against the returnees to the league this season. Sami didn’t have it all their own way though, with Josep Cardona levelling the scores at 1-1 early in the second half before Camps powered Alaior home.
Two of the pre-season favourites for promotion shared the spoils, as CD Migjorn scored late to rescue a 3-3 draw at home to 10-man CD Menorca.
Tied at 1-1 at half time, CD Menorca had been reduced to 10 men towards the end of the first half when Marco Cano received a straight red card, while substitute goalkeeper Jorge Riudavets also saw red.
Although they fell behind to Sergi’s goal, CD Menorca weren’t deterred by their numerical disadvantage and turned things round to lead 3-2 with seven minutes to play.
Juanfran’s equaliser in the 89th minute rescued a point for Migjorn, in a repeat of the Menorca Super Cup final that they won just before Christmas.
The draw does neither side many favours in the chase for a top five spot, which looks like a battle between seven clubs.
Sporting Mahon may have something to say about that, as they sit just two points behind CD Menorca in eighth, but they missed an opportunity to gain ground as they were held to a 1-1 draw by lowly CCE Sant Lluis.
James Lewis’ 75th minute equaliser earned the capital club a point after Daniel Ramirez’s first half opener, which earned Sant Lluis only their fifth point of the season.
