Just one point now separates the four clubs vying for second place and a chance for promotion via the play-offs.

CE Alaior are at the top of that list on 27 points – some 18 behind runaway leaders Mercadal – after a 2-0 win over Atletic Ciutadella enabled them to capitalise on a surprise defeat for CD Migjorn away at Atletico Villacarlos.

While Roman Huescar’s brace was enough for a routine win for Alaior, Villacarlos sprung a surprise by recording only their third win of the season thanks to goals from Alex Guarino and Victor Mamajon which sees Migjorn tumble from second to fifth.

Alongside Migjorn on 26 points are UE Sami and UD Mahon, who have come from nowhere in recent weeks to now sit third in the table.

They were 3-0 winners against CE Ferreries, with goals from Miguel Martinez, Alfonso Collado and Javier Lacueva all coming in the final half hour.

UE Sami defeated Sporting Mahon 2-1 earlier in the weekend, while Mercadal made it 15 wins from 15 by beating Penya Ciutadella 3-1 as their march to the title continues.

Elsewhere, CD Menorca’s hopes of propelling themselves in to the promotion push were dashed by a 1-1 draw at home to CCE Sant Lluis.

Ayman Benet’s penalty was cancelled out by Carlos Stainer 15 minutes from time denying them a win that would have put them just one point behind the promotion chasers.
