One of the finest active Menorquin footballers, Ruben Martinez, has made an interesting move to Greece.

Martinez, 32, was playing in Segunda Division with Albacete, but has now made the move to Lamia in the Greek Super League, the first time he’s played outside of Spain.

Lamia are currently third-bottom in the 14-team division, which includes big names like Olympiakos, Panathinaikos and PAOK.

He told the club’s official website: “I am very happy to be here. Lamia is a special challenge for me as it is the first time I have competed outside of Spain and I am looking forward to wearing the team shirt and together with my teammates doing everything possible to achieve our goals.”

Another Menorquin, Pedro Capo, will get to put his skills to the test against La Liga opposition after his Eldense side were drawn against Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey.

It will be the first time Capo, now 32, has faced a top tier side in the competition.

The game will take place on January 5, with Capo hoping to shake off a small injury to play.

He told the local Menorca paper: “This will be my first adventure in the Cup with a First Division and obviously I am excited, facing people of a level that anyone would have liked to reach.”

Capo has made 12 appearances for Eldense so far this season, including in the Copa del Rey first round win over Coruxo.

He has twice captained the side, as well as coming off the bench to score the winning goal against Gimnastic back in October.

Capo started his career with Sporting Mahones and has also played for Sabadell, Leioa, Real Mallorca B and Atletico Baleares, among others.
